The 1914/1918 Ehrenkreuz

Article about: by danhashman There are those little crossed swords on the ribbon. Is there something to tell about that? I often see Ehrenkreuze whose ribbons have no little swords attached to it, i guess

Just in, here are two more new additions with which I am extremely pleased. Both are civilian "lapel-wear" miniatures with very nice detail and quality.

The first is another one of those rare enamelled miniature "ribbon bars" with the 1914 EK2, the 1914-18 Tapferkeitsmedaille [Bravery Medal] of Sachsen-Altenburg and the Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer as well as a Black Wound Badge, added as a pendant:

And here is a lapel bow with miniature medals representing no less than six decorations:
Present as both ribbons and miniatures are the 1914 EK2, the Silberne Verdienstmedaille mit Schwertern [Silver Medal of Merit with Swords] of Reuß, the Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer and the Austrian Kriegserinnerungsmedaille mit Schwertern [War Commemorative Medal with Swords].
The Hungarian and Bulgarian WW1 commemorative medals are represented by their ribbons only.
Note that the Bulgarian medal was obviously not part of the original set-up, but added at some later date: Instead of the full ribbon bow used for the other decorations, it is represented by two short pieces of ribbon, folded over and stitched to the ribbon for the Hungarian medal. The Bulgarian 1915/18 commemorative medal was instituted in December 1933; the last awards were made in December 1939. The original owner of this piece probably received this award as the last of his four WW1 commemorative medals and decided to add it to his lapel bow.

Lovely, aren't they? All items in this thread were/are purchased from a total of some 10 different dealers whose updates I regularly "monitor". The last two specifically were purchased from André Hüsken.

Spanning the period from Imperial Germany/World War I via the Third Reich/World War II-era and on to the Federal Republic of Germany/the Cold War years, here is a 1957-version stickpin worn by a long-serving non-combatant decorated with the Ehrenkreuz für Kriegsteilnehmer, the Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse (without swords) and the Wehrmacht's 12- and 4-year long service awards.

It is interesting to note that this order of precedence is correct as per the regulations of the 1957 law, whereas the KVK1 would have been worn before the 1914-18 Ehrenkreuz as per the regulations of the Third Reich era.

My latest pieces. First, yet another Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer, neatly mounted in the style as laid down in Wehrmacht regulations, with a metal backing plate lacquered in dull grey:

    The 1914/1918 Ehrenkreuz

Three lapel-wear Bandschleifen [ribbon bows]. Top, a two-place combination of the ribbons for the Prussian Rote-Kreuz-Medaille III. Klasse [Red Cross Medal 3rd Class] and the Ehrenkreuz für Hinterbliebene; bottom, two different Kriegsteilnehmer ones.

    The 1914/1918 Ehrenkreuz

    The 1914/1918 Ehrenkreuz

Another ribbon bow including the Frontkämpfer cross together with another 7 ribbons. (Note that the three "layers" between the EKII ribbon on top and the generic blue long-service award ribbon on bottom are asymmetric, with three different ribbons on each side.)

    The 1914/1918 Ehrenkreuz

    The 1914/1918 Ehrenkreuz

    The 1914/1918 Ehrenkreuz

Finally, another civilian-wear lapel decoration in a rather rare style: This is a cluster of four Bandrollen [ribbon rolls] sewn together and attached to a button:

Wow Andreas. That 8 ribbon bow is a superb piece. I bet it's not an easy thing for someone to make.

Some (slightly early) Christmas gifts to myself... Here is another Kriegsteilnehmer cross, mounted in the traditional "Bavarian" style:

    The 1914/1918 Ehrenkreuz

    The 1914/1918 Ehrenkreuz

A rather nice Hinterbliebenen cross, mounted as a a Damenschleife (ladies' bow):

    The corresponding miniature:

    And the two "sisters" together:

The Damenschleife pieces are great Andreas. I have an EK2 from 1914 and 1939 mounted in this way. Superb and thank you for posting.
