Re: 1938 German athletic medal
You're right that it is a sports competition medal and for a pentathlon winner, allow me to elaborate just a little bit on the inscription:
"Betriebssport-Wettkämpfe 1938" means "Company Sports Competitions 1938".
You know, sports activities undertaken by the staff of companies, usually with support from the employer, like company soccer- or bowling teams. These have long since been popular in Germany and still are.
"FfM." stands for the location, it's the abbreviation for "Frankfurt am Main".
One German city called Frankfurt is located by the Main River and another one by the Oder River; so for identification, they are commonly referred to as "Frankfurt am Main" and "Frankfurt an der Oder", respectively.
"1. Sieger Fünfkampf", as you already wrote, means "1st Place Winner, Pentathlon".

Re: 1938 German athletic medal
Thanks for the translation. So this is not a military or government medal from the times but a business' games award. I assumed military since it came out of a grouping of US wwii vet.
I put it up for bid on ebay; not sure if it has any collector interest.

Re: 1938 German athletic medal
I have seen similar medals before, but never this one.
It is a lot like the shooting or marksmanship awards.
