    Somewhat of a better view.

With the new pictures provided, it is apparent the O.P's badge is a horrible attempt at a copy. However, I discovered something new due to this thread as I didn't know this badge existed, so thank you sir.

Just for the sake of completeness, allow me to add that there were three classes of this badge:

    • Gold for honorary members [Ehrenmitglieder], regular members [ordentliche Mitglieder] and associate members [außerordentliche Mitglieder]
    • Silver for patron members [fördernde Mitglieder]
    • Bronze for corresponding members [korrespondierende Mitglieder]

These came in a large version for formal occasions (the one copied by this fake and seen in the above photograph as worn by Udet, Milch & Heinkel) and a small stickpin version for everyday civilian wear, which consisted of only the eagle-and-swastika without the oakleaves wreath.

For formal occasions, the president and presidium members of the academy wore an elaborate silver-gilt chain of office [Amtskette] which featured the eagle-and-oakleaves badge as a pendant.

Andreas, can you tell us the German name for the award please and I will add it to the terminology thread as well as add it to this one.

It's actually not so much an award as a membership badge/badge of office. I would use the following terminology:

    • Amtskette des Präsidenten und der Präsidiumsmitglieder der Deutschen Akademie der Luftfahrtforschung [Chain of office of the president and the presidium members of the German Academy for Aeronautical Research] [i.e. the silver-gilt chain of office]*)
    • Abzeichen für Ehrenmitglieder, ordentliche Mitglieder und außerordentliche Mitglieder der Deutschen Akademie der Luftfahrtforschung [Badge for honorary members, ordinary members and associate members of the German Academy for Aeronautical Research] [i.e. the gold badge]
    • Abzeichen für fördernde Mitglieder der Deutschen Akademie der Luftfahrtforschung [Badge for patron members of the German Academy for Aeronautical Research] [i.e. the silver badge]
    • Abzeichen für korrespondierende Mitglieder der Deutschen Akademie der Luftfahrtforschung [Badge for corresponding members of the German Academy for Aeronautical Research][i.e. the bronze badge]

*) The president being, unsurprisingly, Hermann Göring. According to Christopher Ailsby, there were slightly different designs for the chains of the president, the vice president and the other presidium members (whereas Forman and Niemann make no distinction in their respective price guides). See here for some more: Ailsby Collection: Membership Badge of the German Academy for Aeronautical Research

    Excellent as always!

    Thank you Andreas!

I'm not quite sure which award the example in post #1 is supposed to be so I have generalized it somewhat with key words.

The badge that started this thread is trying to be the silver version of this award which is the rarest of the three grades. Only one silver grade was awarded.
    cheers
