Default Deutsches Kreuz in Gold: cloth active service version

Hi Guys, one of my favourite items. Given for Bravery in the field requiring an award greater than that of an Iron Cross 1st class.

This embroidered version of this award was authorised on 5th June 1942.

They can be found with field grey backing for the Heer or Waffen SS, Luftwaffe blue for the air force or Navy blue backing for the Kreigsmarine. Panzer units wore black backed versions.

Note the tiny die flaw which can be seen above the number "9" in the date 1941.

    Cheers, Ade.

Very nice! I have always wondered, what are the gold wreath made of?
I have never owned one myself.

Hi Sinni, the gold wreath is a metal pressing with a gilt finish wash.

I bought this one over 30 years ago. These have never been cheap, even back then it cost £75.

    Cheers, Ade.

Mike has ben finding a lot of old threads from the early days of the forum and bringing them back to life. Back then we only had a couple of hundred members.

I have shown a lot from my collection on the forum, especially back them to give it a good start, but I have other things which I have not shown yet. Slowly all will be revealed. Think of it like a strip tease!

    Cheers, Ade.

Is the die flaw specific to a particular maker?

I don't think so Glenn. I'm not sure how many makers there were of these awards but they all seem to exhibit the same feature so it might be a question of just the wreaths being made by one source and supplied to the embroiderers.
Here's mine with the same die flaw. Not much left of the backing cloth but most likely to be Luftwaffe. For the record, this cost me £50 about 20 years ago.
