One more little update to this thread.

Here is a civilian stickpin miniature of the post-war DRL-without-Swastika badge in Bronze:

I have come across some additional information on the early post-war era (1948 - 1952) sports badges with letter combinations other than DRL and thought I should add it here.

Apart from the unofficial "DRL-without-Swastika"-model badges worn by recipients of the Third Reich-era Sports Badge and its de-nazified original examples, the following newly instituted sports badges existed in this transitional period:

    • DSA [Deutsches Sportabzeichen = German Sports Badge]. Awarded from 1948 to 1952 by the Landessportbünde [= State Sports Leagues] of North Rhine-Westfalia (starting 1948) and Schleswig-Holstein (starting 1949) and the Hamburger Sportbund [= Hamburg Sports League] (starting 1949).
    • LSA [Landessportabzeichen = State Sports Badge]. Awarded from 1949 to 1952 by the Württembergischer Landessportbund [= Wurttemberg State Sports League]. (There was also a corresponding "LJA" Youth Sports Badge]
    • BSA [Bundessportabzeichen = Federal Sports Badge]. Awarded from 1949 to 1952 by the Landessportbünde [= State Sports Leagues] of Lower Saxony, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Bremen (all starting 1949) and the Sportbund [= Sports League] Rhine Hesse (starting 1950). (There was also a corresponding "BJA" Youth Sports Badge.)

All of these were discontinued in 1952, when they were replaced by the new "DSB" Sports Badges awarded by the Deutscher Sportbund [German Sports League].

Meanwhile, I have also acquired an example for the de-nazified DRL Sports Badge in Gold, completing the four classes:

That's a very sympathtic de-nazification, care has been taken over that one to make it fit it with the ribbon. Very nice.

Still on the matter of post-war wear of Sports Badges, here is something that should be of general interest.

I came upon this type-written transcript of an information by the Bayerischer Landes-Sportverband [Bavarian State Sports League] while going through some documents that had belonged to my maternal grandfather. It deals with the replacement of the Third Reich-era Sports Badges; a matter which would have been of interest for him, as he had qualified for the Bronze DRL badge in 1937:

    Deutsches Sportabzeichen

    Deutsches Sportabzeichen

For the benefit of the non-German speaking members, here is a translation:

    Transcription
    Sports Badges
    old and new

Numerous inquiries cause us to give the following clarification on the matter of replacements for the Reichssportabzeichen
[= Reichs Sports Badge] attained in the past. All files on the attainment of the Reichssportabzeichen were destroyed in the war, as were the files on the former Versehrtensportabzeichen [= Sports Badge for the War Disabled]. As a replacement for the lost Reichssportabzeichen, the new badge with the letters “DSB” as issued by the Deutscher Sportbund [= German Sports League] is issued. If the applicant still owns the period certificate booklet, the matter is simple. Upon submission of the certificate booklet and payment of 3 DM [= Deutsche Marks] for the badge and 1 DM for the stickpin badge, he is handed out or mailed a new Bundessportabzeichen [= Federal Sports Badge] of the same grade (Bronze, Silver or Gold). Cloth badges are priced at -.50 DM.

In lieu of the certificate booklet, an entry in the applicant’s Wehrpaß
[= military service pass] or Soldbuch [= military paybook] is also accepted as proof. Photographs showing the applicant wearing the badge are not sufficient. The above also applies for the war disabled. They receive the standard version of the Bundessportabzeichen, but in Bronze or Silver only. The former Versehrtensportabzeichen is no more issued.

The matter is more difficult it the applicant is unable to provide written documentation from which the attainment of the sports badge is clearly evident. His only option is to find a sports comrade and to cause him to provide an affidavit in which he confirms that the applicant had qualified for the sports badge at the time. A replacement badge is provided on the basis of this affidavit. A personal affidavit by the applicant cannot be accepted. An affidavit by family members is accepted only in exceptional cases. Due to the lack of any files or documentation, it is not possible to issue duplicates of the original certificate booklets.

Apart from that, it has to be stated that the former Reichssportabzeichen with the letters “DRAL”
[sic!] is sold as a kind of memory or commemorative badge by some pertinent businesses. Without examination of the buyer’s entitlement at that. Through this kind of business practice, the former sports badge loses all athletic value.

    Bayerischer Landes-Sportverband e.V.
[= Bavarian State Sports League, registered association]
Sportabzeichen-Prüfstelle [= Sports Badge Examination Office]
    München 2, Brienner Str. 31/32,
    Haus des Sportes
    [= House of Sports]“

(The "DRAL" is clearly an error, either in the original document or in this transcription; obviously it should be "DRL".)

The final paragraph clearly refers to the post-war era's unofficial "DRL-without-Swastika"-type badges.

Another little addition, again from the DRL-without-Swastika phase. Here is the full set of miniature stickpins for all four classes of the badge:
