A friend has this for sale and I don't think it is good because all of these that I have seen have a metal surround and not a bullion one. It looks very much like a home made item. Can anyone please shed some light on this item? Thank you.

Hi Tom, it is certainly not an issue peice. As you say it lacks the metal wreath and the overall quality is not good.
It would not be for me.
At a real stretch of the imagination it might be called "field made". Or equally fake...
Cheers, Ade.
Compare to the correct issue peice from my collection.
Cheers, Ade.
Thanks Ade. My concern is that it is believed to be good while we both know it's not.

I have seen the bullion version on at least one occasion and with a white summer tunic background to boot, its unreal.
Having said that the quality is no wheres near the ones I have seen.
Best,
Kris
Here is my Silver Cross. It is my understanding that the Silver is MUCH rarer than the Gold. I would guess that is because they issued a lot more Gold than Silver. This same Cross is featured in Dietrich Maerz's new book on DK.
Beautiful crosses, both of you, you lucky blighters!!
Tom
Hi, that is a very nice cross. (Heer or Waffen SS)
Mine has a very dark blue almost black backing so I would call it KM issue.
I bought mine 30 years ago now. I will not upset you all with the price paid back then.
Note the tiny die flaw above the number "9" in the date on the wreath which can just be seen on both. This can be found too on the full size metal issue.
Cheers, Ade.
