It depends whether you're asking about the PKZ number or the LDO number.

There is evidence and plenty of discussion that the PKZ number was in use in 1943 and potentially even earlier in 1941 or '42. Therefore all PKZ numbered awards, those without the 'L' prefix, were numbered or made after the above dates.

The LDO numbers were introduced in late 1940 and by May 1941 all private purchase pieces were to be marked with their respective LDO number.

Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....

    No problem!

Like I said, there is still plenty of discussion over the exact timeline and some may disagree with what I've written but to the best of my knowledge, the above is the most reasonable answer.

It can be almost impossible to determine exactly when an unmarked badge was made. As well as unmarked early Tombak pieces, you can find many late war Zinc badges , from a period long after the introduction of both PKZ and LDO numbers, which are totally unmarked.

The presence of marks, combined with the type of finish, can certainly help put a very approximate period of manufacture, but unmarked medals and badges were produced all through the whole period of the war, any rules on marking often being ignored.

As Adrian has said, it depends on which number is being discussed. I suspect that the plethora of unmarked badges are more likely official award pieces, and that it is in this area that the rules regarding marking were misunderstood or simply ignored. Post 1941, pieces manufactured for the retail marked generally did carry the LDO mark. Even within the different branches of service you'll find differences. Some manufacturers of Kriegsmarine badges did use the official numbering system others didn't. For instance you can find an L/56 U-Boat Badge or Marine Artillery Badge from Funcke & Bruninghaus, but you won't find a numbered badge from Wegerhoff, who only ever used their GWL logo. Other makers didn't use either the mark or the logo.
