Not sure about KM awards, but all Lappland shields are field made. Stewy

Re: field made awards?
A reminder too, that sometimes very poor cast copies are passed off as 'field made'...........

Re: field made awards?
its not very common but with a lot of fakes so it is more of a specialist area as stewy states lappland sheilds are all field made and are distinct because of this

Re: field made awards?
I have seen awards other than Lapp shields. But IMO these are the most commonly encountered "originals". Stewy

Re: field made awards?
I've only ever heard of the Ritterkreuz being made on board a ship or U-Boat, not any lower grade awards. This was done unofficially by the crew for their commander if it was announced he had won the RK during the course of a long voyage and it would be months before he could recieve his proper award.
I think I remember reading that one recipient actually wore his field made award even after he had been given his official RK.
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....

Re: field made awards?
i suppose it would have more meaning if the crew made it anyway.....it also makes me wonder how many of these RKs have been deemed as fake when really they could of been field made....i suppose theres no way of i.d.ing them?

Here's my Lappland shield. I'm comfortable with it,but they're all considered a bit "suss". Stewy
