I would imagine early from the plating and gilt wash
Later stuff tended to be more subdued ( less bling ) which tended to match the declining fortunes of the luftwaffe.

Beautiful original Flugzeugfuhrer & Beobachterabzeichen by Gebruder Wegerhoff of Ludenscheid. Take note of the 'fingerprint' on the reverse of the eagle above the makers mark, a 100% guarantee of an original. The badge was only ever produced in buntmetal as far as I know, so it would certainly not be late war due to material restrictions. What a great badge, well done old bean!

Thank most kindly for the excellent information Ned, the thumb print is fascinating too.
Cool. You only need a Ju88 parked on the drive and you're sorted by the look of it, good score!

GWL was always a particular favorite maker of mine. Their quality and attention to fine detailing was the equal of any of the other "prestigious" makers like Godet, Juncker and more...A Much under appreciated maker!

That´s indeed great stuff!!
I would the badge in the timeline of production put into the mid-war period.A very nice and rare Pilot/Observer badge made of "GWL".

Joe
I agree with Wagriff completely, a way under appreciated maker of this award, see again the 'fingerprint' on another.
A great badge, you're a lucky bloke!....
