Help with German Cross trench art.

I don't think this is a real German cross. I think that it's real trench art spruced up with a reproduction cross. German cross carriers were known soldiers. They wouldn't ever waste their most precious award to make an ashtray out of it. Not even the biggest smoker would do that.

Can't judge for the actual authentication but that story is just my two cents on the piece.

He has been told in few FB groups that it is an original vet / trench art with added fake DKIG.
This first showed up few months ago. The price on it is ridiculous.
