The cross is likely authentic, but the ribbon is from an entirely different medal.

Yea it looks like an iron cross ribbon and the swords I think are from the little pin that comes with some Hindenburgs that I've seen. My brother in law that gave this to me is Russian and his father had this and said during the war he found it in trash at a factory. Idk if that's what happened or not but I know he had family in the red army and the Russian volunteers on Germany's side during the war too.
The ribbon is not from an Iron cross but from the WW1 veterans Kyffhauser award.

The ribbon has the appearance of a WWII German Merit Cross 2nd Class-which is where it would have gotten it's swords, so the swords belong with the ribbon, but the Ribbon doesn't belong with the Medal!

True that, but the KvK was the 1st such "red,white,black,white,red" configuration that popped into my head! I think you nailed it, though, with the Vet's medal! Good spot!
