Luftwaffe badge

Help needed with this badge. Let us state several things for better understanding:
1. We are not collectors.This is a family heritage (given to Gretta`s grandfather who was a Luftwaffe pilot and unfortunately my wife and I did not ask him about the details – the badge was simply kept in our home).Therefore it is not posted for the discussion if it is genuine.
2. It is not for sale – it will remain in our family.
3. It is made by made by GWL (Gebruder Wegerhoff of Ludenscheid).We met a man who worked in Ludenschied but he is not a collector. He only remembered they made it.
4. It is in its original box.

Questions:
1. What was that badge given for?
2. What is its value? We saw that you discussed prices here – not against the rules of the forum, we suppose. Its value is only for our better understanding if the grandfather was given it for his special achievements or it was given to all Luftwaffe pilots.We would appreciate honest answers, and other collectors may learn from the pics posted how the genuine badge is supposed to look, and also the box. Thanks in advance for the information and also thanks to the collectors who cherish the items given to those who served their country.

It is the standard Luftwaffe Pilot's qualification badge. Awarded to all pilots.

Very nice to know who it was awarded to and having the original box is a real bonus too.

Value: I would say in the region of 1500 Euros.

We do appreciate the info very much. The price was not important issue but we thought it was awarded only to distinguished pilots. It also makes no difference, regarding heavy losses on both sides, all pilots were heroes. Thanks again,

The badge was worn on the upper left uniform pocket, below the Iron Cross 1st Class. Eligible to receive it were all those who completed pilot training.
