    I was surprised that most of the silver gilt still remains on the wreath. It was worn, and zinc was notorious for loosing the finish.

    Really like the look of that badge , the eagle looks crisp. Nice pick up.

    Hi HC,

    Looking at the reverse of the badge I think i can see a reddish texture peeking through the silver, is that so? If it is then the wreath was copper coated, and the silver gilt adheres far better to that higher quality alloy than to the poorer quality zinc. In some cases the badge can appear almost brand fire new.

    Hi Ned, Yes I see what you are saying. Closer to the hinge it is reddish.
