Original IMO, the maker is referred to SHuCo.
I believe this it the type referred to as the 'Unknown flatback', 2.13.1 on Norm's classification table.
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....
well guys i sure apreciate the review, i thought at first SHuCo.
but i guess a 2.13.1 would be a good answer. i saw the badge on a militaria website.
looked ok to me, but i must always run it by you guys , thank you
Hi Guys,
As Adrian said, this is the unknown flatback maker. This looks like a good example of this type as far as it goes, but bear in mind it's still unknown whether these badges were late war produced or post-war or both. They are the poorest production quality of all the Minesweeper Badges, and the margins are always hand filed causing a considerable variability in outline between examples, in contrast to others which used standardized trimming stamps.
Since all the "flatback maker" Kriegsmarine badges use the same obverse designs as the Pforzheim (and Vienna) makers, one theory which I've suggested in the past is they may have originated from one of the Pforzheim makers after Pforzheim was flattened by the bombing in late war, as they tried to eke out a living in the late war and then post-war barter trade. They don't appear in groupings with provenance in the same manner as Schwerin, Juncker, Schickle, Deumer, RK, AS in triangle (marked and unmarked) do, and as such are the least desirable of Minesweeper badges to collectors, which should be reflected in the price.
Best regards,
---Norm
