Questionable Ostmedaille

Article about: I recently acquired this Ostmedaille, marked 60 (?) on the ring. I think it's a 60, but it's hard to read. It looks like it was painted silver around the rim and on the helmet. I have compar

So lets keep it simple and just talk about either zinc or tombak/buntmetal.

I absolutely agree, Glenn! But keep in mind that tombak and Buntmetall are not "really" interchangeable as tombak is an alloy made of copper and a lower zinc content, whereas Buntmetall is a term covering many metals/alloys. The only difference between brass and tombak (both are examples of Buntmetall) for instance is the ratio of copper versus zinc. But let's keep it simple here on the forum as you say! We are not scientists most of us anyway

So, with little to lose, I decided to clean the silver paint, if it would come off easily. Since it looked like Testors hobby paint, I thought it would. And for the most part it did. I need to get a toothpick and clean out the crevices where some residual paint is sticking (carefully, of course). Without the paint it is slightly lighter grey on the rim and helmet, as it should be.

I like it better au natural than with that garish silver paint.

I also got a little toy today, a USB microscope. Got a good closeup of that hard-to-read makers mark. Definitely a 60.

    Mehr kommen wieder.
