I just recently had one in hands! And what I can say regading the attachments is that they are very simillar the way officers Wappens(front plates!) are attached to the Pickelhaube, with a extra reinforcement plate backing up the insigna.
Very very different to the one that is showed here!
cheers

well i think those of us that have seen the back of these things know it's nothing like what you see here.
If one looks hard enough, there are photos of both the fronts and the backs of these badges on the internet out there. I, personally, consider the secrecy of these badges as a wee bit "too little-too late". As said, there have recently been some Very high grade fakes of these on the markets of late. So, despite all the clandestine "I won't show you the details" stuff....sorry, but that cat's been long out of the bag for some time now.

Interesting thread and link to say the least.
Cheers for the link Eric.
There is a photo of the reverse of one of these on the forum although why the fascination for these is beyond me. They look really naff - the originals I mean - and are just the most awful, cheap looking 'seaside' souvenir type pieces the SS were ever unfortunate to have to wear.
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....
There is a huge and fascinating thread on this item on WAF

Obviously, they were a huge hit with the SS, as nearly every photo you ever see of them has one in it....*cough*
