Looks like a silvered iron medal from it's appearance. Nice to see the matching case as well. An excellent piece.

It looks like a very nice piece. Were these ever maker marked?

There's been years of bickering over these medals...On occasion, you'll find them stamped L/58 on the rings and many collectors avoid these pieces like death, as they were made by Souval, who, as everyone knows, made medals many years after 1945. However, Souval Was, indeed, an authorized maker of these medals also, so there Are legitimate marked ones out there with L/58 on them. Everyone generally chooses to be safe, though, and usually pass on any marked ones they see. (I would too....I've never felt good about Any Souval piece)

Thanks William. I agree the name Souval doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in collectors. I have an L/58 marked EK2 which has drawn mixed feelings and I've never seen another which makes it different from most other marked L/58 pieces which crop up on a more regular basis, good thing or bad thing? I don't know but there are legitimate L/58 marked boxes for these awards so some of them are definitely original. Picking one of these against a post war piece is the hard part.

Its worth taking a calculated risk with the lower end Souval awards imo
