Just received this eyecatching bar for someone who served in both wars

Three Austrian fold ribbons together !

That's an interesting bar Nick. I don't think I've ever seen one before!

Are the medals actually attached to the fixing bar, sewn together or just slid along it loose?

The medals are sewn together and slid along the bar loose and locked in place with the pin !

That's exactly what I was thinking. The look of the medals vs the look of the ribbons doesn't quite match in my eyes. Couple that with the ribbons look like they were folded and sewn yesterday, there isn't any traces of them being together for any length of time makes me wonder.
Usually the edges of the ribbons would show a bit of dirt, wear and there should be a bit of dust and dirt within the folds. I'm just not seeing any.
