Hi
Its got a great patina. A all round nice example.
And it looks like Nicks given his approval so It must be original!
Thanks
Cameron
Looks like a nice unmarked Schwerin. The catch may have been replaced, though, as it seems to be a different metal than the pin and hinge.

I also say original for this one but why oh why, with Schwerin being one of the premier badge makers, did they make a badge with a cartoon parrot instead of an eagle?

With no disrespect in any way shape or form to Nick intended - this applies to every member here - and as advice meant with the best intentions, please don't fall into the 'follow my leader' trap and assume that because member 'X' says something is good, it must be good. Everyone makes mistakes from the newest collector to the most experienced.
As a new collector I would advise you to look up the item in question, research some other examples, good and bad and compare the details. Form your own opinion and don't be afraid to say the opposite if it's what you think based upon your research. It makes learning these pieces much more fun and you get the benefit of your own work which will stick in your mind much more than looking at a badge, seeing everyone else say it's original and not actually knowing why.
If you make a mistake, no problem, the other members here can advise and point things out which again, you will learn more from and remember for the future.

"cartoon parrot instead of an eagle?" Well...they Were Navy afterall....didn't all ships have the Jolly Roger type of parrot aboard? "Pieces of 8! Pieces of 8!".....

You have to agree though, not exactly the most intimidating eagle is it?
