Default Westwall Medal (Deutsche Schutzwall Ehrenzeichen)

I received my example of the Westwall Medal today. I believe this is an early version of the medal, made of a brass or tombak. In looking into this medal, I found two versions of medals (brass/tombak from the first issuing, and zink for a second issue) and two colors of ribbons (a more yellow like mine, and a more brown colored that seems to accompany the zinc).

I'm not sure if this ribbon is original or not, and it seems there's some controversy about them anyway. This one does not glow under blacklight for what it's worth. I couldn't find any information regarding why there seems to be two colors floating around either.

The packet is the controversial Schrobenhansen with an "n" where the "u" would normally be. There seems to be some disagreement in regards to if these are original or not. I think from hearing all the sides and evidence, I incline more to the original camp. But, that said, it may not matter as I don't believe even an original error/typo packet would be the match for this early version. And so, I'm not sure if the maker is correct for this medal or not. Is there a way to tell who made this one? I find no maker marks on it.

It's a lovely medal in any case, and it's nice to have an example of it.

    Thanks for looking!

Nice looking first issue West Wall Medal! I only have my phone but I would say.the ribbon looks good also. I know nothing of the packet however.

Rare to find maker marks on WW's but they pop up from time to time.

There seems to be quite a variance to these
ribbons, but a medium 'earth brown' as
    you show looks correct, IMO.........

That's the truth. The medium earth brown as you call it was the most consistent shade I saw when it popped up. When you get into the more reddish toned, darker brown, there were at least 3 shades I found, which if the one's we have are correct, it makes it murky waters on the other tones as to what is correct or not there.

I know your fond of these medals too, as your posts and examples in other threads were helpful to me. I put off this medal for a while as it wasn't high on my list, but this one came up for sale on a forum and I couldn't resist it. The highlights and details were too attractive, and being early it was too good to pass up. Having it in hand, I have to echo what you and others have said about how nice they are, even to the point where photos have a hard time doing them justice IMO.

Well the one you show - besides having a correct
ribbon - has gorgeous toning. Congrats !

Some of the ribbons we see on West Wall medals
may be for the Lifesaving awards of the TR
period. They are a lighter shade of yellow,
    but are very similar.........

    Steve.

    A very nice example Scott!
Might very well NOT be your last.
Here is one I posted previously with maybe a truer color to the ribbon. The color of the bar appears to be more like the one you posted.
