is it not a West Wall ribbon?
I thought of that Rene but the ribbon seems to end in white and with his age and low rank makes me think of local guy.

Many thanks for your responses. Here is another photo as a Obergefreiter. This time he is wearing his tunic correctly. I have a West Wall Medal in my collection but do not remember where it came from. Perhaps it was his. He served most of his time in Poland, but I believe he was in France in the early part of the war.
there we go problem solved, deffo a West Wall

Re: What's this ribbon?
So I guess once he got his eagle and ribbon situated correctly he was promoted to Obergefreiter.

Re: What's this ribbon?
In the first image do you think the eagle is sewn on or just sitting on a fold.Have a look at the depression in the tunics material just under the bird.
