You are fortunate to catch it in a very early stage. I've seen badges stuck in drawers for years come out and be a mass of white powder dust.

question, ...... i picked up Rexall petroleum jelly, does the brand matter, or does it have to be Vaseline specifically?

If it's the same product but just a different name it shouldn't make any difference.

Adrian, Both are Petroleum jelly, just two different makers. I just wasn't sure if Vaseline had something specific in it or not.

It is the same thing. They both will work.

Yes, both are the same, of course, and should work fine! If nothing else, not only will you be smothering the zinc pest, but the application of the vaseline will actually make the metal look even better in appearance-it will take away that "dry and dusty" look so many of the old zinc pieces have! You'll have to post some photos of it "post treatment!" Good luck!

I am not a fan of cleaning badges or medals. But when i see a reaction of the material,i am also protect my zinc badges or clasps.I use a soft gun/rifle oil for that.

But vaseline it is of course also very good!

A important thing imo is also to touch the badges only with hand gloves and protect it of the sun.

Ohh! A soft and supple anti-partisan badge!

I'd say just use pure vasoline/ petroleum jelly... Nothing else.

I would agree with that. No idea if Aloe makes a difference either way but I wouldn't risk it, just use the tried and tested plain old vaseline.
