Hi Gary
The badge is a fake. The eagle have no Assmann design. Also the set-up and the rivets are wrong.Complete fake badge...

Joachim
Unfortunately I agree with all Joachim's points.
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....
Thanks guys I had been looking on the net and could not find a assman badge that looked like this. This is why I stay away from badges. That is untill I get some good reference books. Thanks again guys. Gary
Yes,a fake as Joachim states. Sorry, Stewy
Hello Gary,
as said before this is a reproduction. Not bad quality at first glance but the indicators are:
The wreath is cast. Notice the soft details that are displayed. Even on later produced badges in zinc the details remain crisp.
The Eagle is cast, Tombak Assmann eagles were quite sturdy birds but you will again notice the soft cast details on yours. The later zinc eagles are very sleek.
The 'A' stamp is very crude. They were never marked with such a bad stamp. (I am not sure but even your stamp looks like it is cast in)The tombak stamp did start to look quite wide on original badges but the zinc badges always have a neat 'A'
The rivets for a tombak badge should be quite flat looking and on the zinc badge they should look like neat copper with a rounded head.
Hope this helps
All the best
Doug
