Looks like there is some kind of record for your guy in the Brandenberg archives, its a public record as well so you might be lucky. This has to be your guy as he's from Altlandsberg, specifically a town called Belzig near Brandenberg which is a suberb of Berlin.

I have just read your postings. Thank you very much for all your helpful input. It is greatly appreciated.
Regarding the story. The Captain apparently told his family the deceased had been the local Burgemeister. However, I am sure he could just as easily been any type of government official, and the nomenclature was generically applied.
