Ausweis for local gaurd of some sort?
Hello,
Would be interested to know if this type of ausweis was issued to the local population and what were their tasks?
Would they join the SS or policeman in the "hunt" and killing of local Jews?
Sorry if the question might seem insensitive, not intended to offend anyone.
The feldpostnummer listed does not appear in Tessins list after early 1941, so can't locate what unit this was for to check.
Huddyhuddy: The Urkrainische Selbstschutzverbände were made up of ethnic Germans called, “Black Sea Germans,” and the history of the Urkrainische Selbstschutzverbände, which translate as Ukrainian Self-defense Groups, goes back to the Russian October Revolution when those militia-type units fought with the White Russians against the Bolsheviks. They also provided auxiliary forces for the Germans in WWI. In WWII they came under the control of the SS and were heavily involved as auxiliaries in the round up and deportation of Jews. The best source for information in English on the Urkrainische Selbstschutzverbände is Eric Conrad Steinhart, Creating Killers: The Nazification of the Black Sea Germans and the Holocaust in Southern Ukraine, 1941-44, Chapel Hill, 2010. Huddyhuddy: There is an interesting clue as to what this particular man was doing. The passage in the Ausweis is "Nocturnal patrols in localities occupied by the German Wehrmacht may only be used on the express order of the local commander." In Steinhart's book, he writes about members of the Urkrainische Selbstschutzverbände working in two-man patrols in different villages. Some of the patrols were during daylight and others at night, and their job was to check the identities of "suspicious" types. Jews were apparently arrested on sight and often simply taken into the woods and shot. It is reasonable, based on the Ausweis, to assume that he was authorized to make such patrols. Dwight
