Feldpost# 12179

Could anyone help me confirm if this fp# (12179) belonged to the 179th Art. Reg. in Sept. 1942?
I just received this feldpost and I'd just like to have these particulars confirmed 100%, if anyone's got any further info on this Reg. from Sept. throughout Jan. 1943 I'd appreciate it a lot as well...

ps: I'm already aware of the Lexikon Der Wehrmacht page and there's not a whole lot about their involvement in Stalingrad etc. on there (couldn't find that fp# there either) so anything related to this in more detail would be received with thanks!

-Thank you, Paul! Doesn't matter all that much if it's not Art Reg 179, that was just the sellers "guesstimate" I guess... The soldier writes that he's hoping they'll have taken Stalingrad before the winter sets in (written Sept. 20th 1942) so there's gotta be some connection there, and the letter he's writing is adressed to his brother at fp#20250, tried finding that one as well but I haven't found anything conclusive on that #... any idea?

This one's my first feldpost and I think these are very exciting pieces of history, hope to get more good ones!

Looks like the original unit was part of 56 ID which was fighting in the area of Orel in late 42 , early 43 so the comment about Stalingrad may be just a general comment !

Thanks again! This is all very confusing, it's certainly not easy following the trails and whereabouts of the different units etc. throughout the war

So, this letter was written Sept. 20th, 1942 for feldpost # 12179 which would connect it specifically to :
(15.7.1942-24.1.1943) 2. Panzerjäger-Kompanie Panzerjäger- u. Aufklärungs-Abteilung 156,

dann 2. Panzerjäger-Kompanie Schnelle Abteilung 156


And the recipients feldpost # 20250 would be connected to one of these? :

(2.1.1940-27.4.1940) Stab III u. 9.-12. Kompanie Infanterie-Regiment 379,

(1.8.1943-23.3.1944) 3.1.1944 Stab III u. 9.-12. Kompanie Grenadier-Regiment 379


Did the above mentioned "Stab III u. 9.-12. Kompanie Infanterie-Regiment 379" simply change name from "Infanterie- Regiment 379" to "Grenadier- Regiment 379" while having the 20250 feldpost # all the way through? Hope that's not too stupid of a question, still learning... and there's obviously LOTS to learn

From one of the links I can see that the recipient of the letter would have been stationed in Finland at this time, correct?

Infanterie Rgt 379 was renamed Grenadier Rgt 379 on 15th October 1942 and it does look like they kept the same FpNr. And yes, they were stationed in Finland from June 1941 through to early 1944 whereas 56 Infanterie Division (Panzerjäger- u. Aufklärungs-Abteilung 156) were stationed with Army Group Center from mid/late 1941 to early 1945.

Good stuff... thanks a lot! I guess I'll have to keep looking and do my research so that I'll eventually have a good Stalingrad feldpost to go with my Stalingrad erkennungsmarke... any suggestions as to good Stalingrad unit feldpost numbers to look for?

It would take a lot of time to research all the FP Numbers of the Stalingrad units unless someone has already done it ???
