Re: Feldpost numbers help
Many yhanks anyway Ade. The assistance you gave me is much appreciated.
Does anyone else know whether the circular stamp which is not clear (but looks something like M20372) would relate to the 4th Sicherungs Division or the 44th minensuche flotilla headquarters?
As you said the soldbuch feldpost number M35032 relates to the 44. Minensuch-Flottille A-Gruppe M 4457.
The circular seal stamp was obviously placed in the soldbook at the same time as the FP no, so, it must relate to this unit, or its headquarters.
Would anybody mind having a look in their references for a likely candidate.
Many thanks
Martyn

Re: Feldpost numbers help
Thanks a lot for the welcome and the information. I am a history buff, but this request was of a more personal nature. My wife's grandfather did not return from the war and in his last letter he gives the 56387E number as his destination. The letter was on Jan 21, 1945. Can we assume this feldpost number was still with the 49th regiment in 1945? My best "guess" so far is that he was trapped in the Halbe Cauldron.

Re: Feldpost numbers help
Hi, yes, the number would almost certainly have remained in use with the Regt into those final days of the war.
Some basic info on the units final days can be found here:

Cheers, Ade.

Re: Feldpost numbers help

Re: Feldpost numbers help
31266
Mobilmachung-1.1.1940 Luftwaffen-Sanitäts-Bereitschaft 2/III.
2nd one's more interesting
58033
(12.3.1943-7.9.1943) schwere Panzerjäger-Kompanie Lettische SS-Freiwilligen-Division,
(8.9.1943-22.4.1944) 3.3.1944 schwere Panzerjäger-Kompanie 15 (15. SS-Division),
(25.11.1944-8.5.1945) 12:12.1944 Regimentsstab Bau-Regiment 1 (15. SS-Division).
and a little info courtesy of Axis History
15. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (lettische Nr. 1) was formed 1943 when the newly formed Lettische SS-Freiwilligen Legion was upgraded to a division. It contained manpower from numerous Latvian units that had previously supported the Germans, including units involved in the Holocaust such as the Arājs Kommando, a unit of the Lettische Hilfspolizei controlled by the SD responsible for the murder of 20.000-30.000 Jews.
It was sent to the front Nov 1943 where it fought the Red Army's winter offensive.
It was sent to West Prussia to recover from the losses suffered the Soviet offensive in the autumn of 1944. It returned to the front Jan 1945 and continued fighting the Red Army until the end of the war when it managed to surrender to the western Allies.
