How are you able to get the info as I thought zee Germans only released that detail to 'next of kin'?

That info is readily available on the Volksbund site and is free to access. It is the WASt & German Red Cross who only release information held in a soldiers files (units served in, where KIA/MIA etc) to the NOK, and sometimes (although apparantly not very often) even they send it to those who ask.
