    I think Slados has looked up this soldier and is giving you his service history, ie which regiments he served with between which dates, and making the point that he belonged to a Panzer Regiment.

    It is the unit info corresponding to the feldpost number written on the envelope --- 27732 F --- your letter was written 17th of May, 1943 so it seems your man would have been a part of 10. SS-Panzergrenadier-Division, soon to be 10. SS-Panzer-Division "Frundsberg". Seems they were in France at this time.

    Thats great information Slados.

    Panzergrenadiers are mechanized infantry, (i.e. soldiers who are transported into combat in motorised vehicles).

    The letter is written in 'sütterlinschrift' in English that's sütterlin writing. It is difficult to read, but if you want to know what the ss man wrote, you can find the sütterlin font online and use that to help decipher the letter. It will take some time, I did it my self too with some of my letters.

    The letter was written by an SS private named Helmut Heim and sent to one Miss Luise Waller. It says:

    "O.U. [= Ortsunterkunft] 17.5.43

    Liebe Luise!

    Herzlichen Dank für Deinen Brief vom 13.5.,
    den ich heute erhielt. Daß es Dir noch gut
    geht freut mich. Dasselbe kann ich auch
    von mir schreiben.

    Ich hätte Dir schon im letzten Brief schreiben
    können, daß ich an Deiner Verlobung
    zweifle, aber ich wollte Dich nicht ent-
    täuschen. Ich habe den Brief einen älteren
    Kameraden lesen lassen u.
    [= und] der sagte
    gleich zu mir: u.
    [= und] das glaubst Du?
    Nun ja, wenn es auch so gewesen
    wäre, hätte ich ja trotzdem nichts
    dran ändern können.

    Ich hab Dir doch einmal geschrieben, daß
    ich zu den Panzern versetzt worden bin,
    u.
    [= und] da bin ich jetzt in der Werkstatt.
    Wir liegen in Südfrankreich, eine
    fabelhafte Gegend. Heute hat es wieder
    über 30° Wärme. Du kannst Dir denken,
    daß ich jeden Tag baden gehe. Nun
    zu der Uniform, es ist eine schwarze.
    Ich hätte Dir ein Bild geschickt, aber solange
    ich von Dir kein großes habe, schicke
    ich Dir keins.

    Will nun für heute schließen.

    Es grüßt Dich recht herzlich
    Dein Helmut

    Andreas you as always are too kind !

    You really need to charge for a translation service as the amount of folk who buy things when they cannot understand a word of German and then need a translation seems to be ever on the increase . I think we need to at least insist that they donate to the forum or become gold members !!
