Just a suggestion, but if you took a picture of the picture straight on, not at an angle, it may be easier to make out details, etc. Off course it would be optimal if you could scan the original at 600 dpi and post the scan. Any inexpensive scanner, like an Epson, Canon, or HP multi function home scanner/printer can do this now. I hope you don't take this as condescending, it's just the computer nerd in me trying to offer some suggestions. Another option, since I don't know what country you are from or what options you may or may not have, is to take your original photos and have them scanned at a photo place/lab. Nowadays having a few scans made is super inexpensive and once you have the scans, you can put the originals in a safe place without worry of further wear and tear.
You have some very interesting pictures. May I ask how you came to be in possession of them?
