In the Prussian army, as in Prussian society, the patriarchy operated, that is; the father was the central figure. Frederick the IIm for instance, regarded himself as a father figure, as well as the first servant of his state, and a soldier. In the army, the commander was also a father figure, not a comic book character as you see in Hollywood depictions of German officers. Eicke adapted a bastardized version of this paternal principle in his leadership of Standarte 10 of what was later called the Allgemeine SS, and also, then, in the Wachverbaende. The army in 1914-18 had fallen apart, in some degree, because of social cleavages in the ranks that mirrored society. He was a witness to this process in his time in the old army.
Eicke and others of his generation (including in the Reichswehr, Hausser and Steiner, for instance...) sought to bridge this divide of rank, birth, social origin. Such an idea evolved into a central quasi democratic tenet of national socialism, so long as you were racially a German.
Eicke was capable alternately of acts of camraderie to his troops as well as exceptional brutality and arbitrariness, as he, himself, had received in the crucial internecine fights in the years prior to 1933 which resulted in Himmler locking him up in the Klapsmuehle.
The new biography I included is an extraordinary work, especially about the early epoch of this man's life, i.e. until 1933 or 1934 in which his life was more or less very close to that of a terrorist or guerilla fighter.
By today's standards, he would be quite close to a terrorist.
Do read the book as I did. I learned a great deal, and he resided in a part of Germany that I know very well, the Pfalz, and so it all is quite compelling.

The book is not a photo book. It is a scholarly biography of Eicke in German.
The picture I enclosed is from a photo album of an SS man that was for sale.
Many such candid pictures of Eicke exist here on this site.
If you are interested in the III. Reich, all of you should read some serious books in addition to just looking at pictures.
My wife says that I just look at pictures, by the way.....
