Was this man volunteered from the SD for combat or is these another reason why he would be wearing a blank tab?

Death Card of the end of the Battel of Caen - France !
    Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler
    Tank Man

On 9 and 10 July the British and Canadians were able to conquer the North and West of Caen. A further nine days later, on 19 July 1944, the entire city under allied control. Then the Allies tried to break through on the road to Caen-Falaise Falaise. The subsequent battles known as the Falaise pocket.
The repeated British attacks in the area tied Caen major German troops. This allowed the American troops landing to expand the western part of the bridgehead, and ultimately to achieve at Saint-Lô the decisive breakthrough. The fighting around Caen were indeed costly, but ultimately helped the Allies to a fixed base in northern France, with which they first occupied Paris, and later Germany.

The medieval city of Caen and the surrounding villages, towns, and also the area were destroyed by Allied bombing, the shelling and fighting for the most part. The reconstruction of the destroyed Caen lasted from 1948 to 1962.
