Have you seen an Arbeitsbuch which the binding along the spine is missing?

It's quite common for the binding on the spine to be damaged or missing. It's the same with Wehrpaß and Soldbuch documents. The fabric used to bind the spine simply isn't as durable as the rest of the buch, and frays/peels very easily. It doesn't affect the integrity of the buch, as long as the staples binding it together are intact. Nothing to worry about, and shouldn't affect the collection value of the item.

For reference, one of my Wehrpasses that is a little worse for wear. As you can see, it's always the spine that suffers first.
