Article about: Hello folks. Well, there go the last of my W&P savings! I wasn't going to spend the remainder, but after Espenlaub listed this on their site, I couldn't resist. This is by far the most I

If anyone has any additional information, I'd be very pleased to hear it. The inscription on the back of the photograph is of particular interest. Once again, we miss the presence of Andreas!

Got to say that there are some excellent photos in this album , one of my closest German veteran friends was in the DF , he would have loved to have seen these photos although he didn't join the Regiment until late 1942 , great purchase

The photo with the Stug is interesting as the use of Winteranzug 42 would date the photo as winter 1942 at the earliest .

Kanonier is normally associated as an artillery rank, unless the man on the VDK site isn't him?

Am I right in thinking Der Führer we're withdrawn from the front in June 42? In which case Karl was an unfortunate loss before they were moved from the fighting?
Der Fuhrer were withdrawn from the Eastern Front in early 1942 after the winter Battles at Rzhev where they ended the battle with only 35 men fit for combat . They were sent home in late February 1942 and began reconstitution at Luneburg Heide in mid march 1942 . The whole of Das Reich Division was now back in the west and in July they were moved to the 7th Army area in France around Le Mans and then Normandy . The Division including DF returned to the Ostfront in early January 1943 so it would appear that Karl Stockinger was killed whilst the Division was refitting in Germany June 1942 .

On reviewing the Sterbebild i see it says he was killed in the east which would fit in with Black Cats VB search where the only Karl Stockinger was killed or missing on 5/6/42 at
    Bol Dubowizy .

Bol Dubowizy was in the area of the Demjansk pocket and was subject to heavy fighting in June 1942 in particular by the Freikorps Danmark who were attached to the Totenkopf Division at Demjansk . The hometown of the casualty on the VB was Sierning which is in the Steyr region of Austria and the Sterbeild was printed in Steyr so it would seem to be the right man .

    Nachname:
    Stockinger
    Vorname:
    Karl
    Dienstgrad:
    Kanonier
    Geburtsdatum:
    20.02.1924
    Geburtsort:
    Sierning
    Todes-/Vermisstendatum:
    05.06.1942
    Todes-/Vermisstenort:
    Bol Dubowizy

Although the original SS Standarte that formed Der Fuhrer was recruited in Austria it would appear that Stockinger was killed whilst serving with Totenkopf or the Freikorps Danmark !

Thank you very much for this additional information, Paul. You’ve shed more light on the details of this man’s service than I could ever have hoped for.
