It's almost certainly one of several from the Kommandantur. I doubt that "orders and instructions resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands" were typed on it, but the description makes it more interesting for the museum display. The camp at Bergen-Belsen was not a death camp, but a labour camp and the death toll until January 1945 was not excessive. With the influx of new prisoners from January 1945, caused by the evacuation of other liberated camps, the new commandant, Josef Kramer, could not cope with the numbers and disease became virulent. The death toll multiplied, mainly from the poor sanitary conditions and lack of sufficient nutrition, and it was estimated at approximately 35000 between January and the camp liberation in April 1945.

An old thread but one worth noting again - especially as many members will not have seen the item shown above.
The Bergen-Belsen camp, or rather, collection of camps - there were various distinct camps located within its boundaries, held around 7,000 people in summer 1944. By early 1945, that figure had risen to 20,000. In mid-April 1945, when the British forces finally arrived, around 60,000 people were crammed into the worst imaginable conditions. Disease was rife and many thousands died following the liberation. The total number of deaths - including those who passed away after the liberation, was approximately 50,000. The entire site was burned to the ground by the British forces to prevent the spread of typhus.

Very Odd! there is No SS rune key on that typewriter.
My Erika has the SS rune key. I also have 5 or 6 other SS keyed typewriters, all portables except one big desk type.
Sarge
There is an SS key Sarge - look at the top row, second key - i.e. the "2" key.
Regards,
Carl
