Here is a rather unique piece of equipment from the Vietnam war. Due to the harsh jungle environment and tropical conditions, ways to carry large amounts of water for each individual was a necessity for survival. An earlier 2 qt canteen had been developed and fielded but the need still persisted in having the ability to carry more water.
A 5 qt collapsible canteen/flotation bladder was developed in 1968 and was sent to units in Vietnam. As you can see by the DSA number this item was produced in 1968 and was also distributed the same year.
The unique feature of this particular bladder is the material on the inside. It was designed to collapse when water was consumed and it prevent the "sloshing" sound of a half full canteen. This help provide the all necessary stealth and noise discipline when on an ambush patrol behind enemy lines..
The canteen cap was a model M1942 black resin cap and as mentioned this bladder could be inflated and used as a flotation device for personnel and equipment to be floated across rivers and streams and other bodies of water..
As the military designed newer equipment for use by it's military members old designs such as this bladder were instrumental in future developments of water carrying systems..
A perfect example of this new development from old designs is the present day water hydration set that the military uses known as "THE CAMEL BACK"...
