One thing that raises concerns is the abbreviation "Usch", as the official abbreviation of Unterscharführer was "Uscha". The "/" instead of an "-" in the rank designation is also odd.

    Hi Gentlemen

I am not specialist, may be good or not ......
Just to say that the black paint is very old and the box in very poor condition (the owner wanted to burn because many worm holes, i said him to keep and not to clean it) .

Not from Normandy but from center of France. When i return there, i can make more pictures for you , from very near to see better and have the answer .

    Best regards from Paris

    Hi HPL2008

I am not 100% sure , for example in SS rank abbreviations
we have a list of abreviations, and you're right we find Uscha , not Usch.

But we have also Rttf for SS-Rottenführer.

Searching , i find this picture (here also, good or not, i can't say) . We see that it's not written Rttf but "ss-Rott". (page 1)
    And Rttfhr (page 2).

We find also on this document, the use of the "/" instead of an "-" .

Then, what can we say ? This paper is not good , or some differents ways to write the SS abreviations exist ?

I have also found this picture of helmet (Usch)

Ammo Box named to an SS Unterscharfuhrer

An other example of the use of "/"

Finally , if we forget the old box, can we confirm that different abbreviations were available for these SS ranks ? different from the official list.

I have seen letters written home from British soldiers during the war, alot were not that well educated pre-war, by todays standards one would think they had been written by children

Looks like a small paint brush to me, the thickness and density of the writing varies and is not uniform, the two 1's are written in an Eastern European style, the Poles and the Bulgarians do their " 1s " like that, I have just had two Christmas cards, my address is number 11, i assume german 1's are written the same ?

I do not feel its been written by a french hand

Sorry, but no: We don't. Please note that I was referring to the "/" in the rank designation ("SS/Usch"), not the unit designation (where its use is correct).

I agree that it is possible that unoffical or incorrect abbreviations were used by individuals, but please note also that I did not make a definitive claim about the originality of the item; I wrote that these things raise concerns.

Ok HPL2008, thank you for your answer .

My fault, i had misunderstood your sentence

The box is not important, we can forgive it, just the text is important.

i'll try to find some examples of SS / rank .

For the usch / uscha you have seen that it was possible (if the helm paint is original)

Best regards from France , MFG
