What was the point of the hide retaining the hair on these, insulation?

The cow hide kept the contents dry. Also, it should be noted the German economy had a highly developed leather industry and it made sense to continue using such natural items. Synthetics required oil. NH
The ones I've encountered have always been maker-marked and dated...I'm sure upon closer examination you will find them marked as well...The good thing about these is that they are still quite affordable and can often still be used...
