    yes it world war II era, however i think it is a commercial compass, which could be bought by a Soldaten Officer or EM. The design has been around since the 30's so they been in the market for a while when war broke out. Soldaten would commonly buy these.

    Imagine getting lost or you have to move in certain direction and you are a obergrefeiter leading other soldaten. Compass would help out a lot.

    Yeah I live in Germany and the roads make no sense and the woods are plentiful and thick. I could not imagine not having a sense of direction in places like here. Thanks for the info.
