Well, my mail sack arrived and I'm quite happy with it - although the decades of dust embedded in the hessian took ages to blow out with compressed air and a few hours in the sunlight helped remove a lot of the musty smell.
Being in a dusty indoor environment ( I tend to believe the sellers "found in an attic" story ) means no UV so the colours ( or colors to some of you ) are nice and strong and the fibre not rotted. There are a few rust stains - maybe transferred from rusty things resting against it?
The 'roll' around the top has me puzzled - it contains a fibrous material ( maybe horse hair or flax or similar ) that stiffens the round section almost as if it were to be attached to a loop or bracket holding it open - maybe inside a pillar box or a building where the mail was dropped in a slot and this was behind it ... any thoughts?
Cheers, Dan
