I rarely disagree with Ade's knowledge, but I worry that these are an early 5 hole Bundeswehr type that someone has cut down to pass them off as the 3 hole WW2 versions. ( the first hole is just too close to the end )

The lowly Gamaschen - who collects them??

Hi Dan, no, the Bundeswehr ones use a much finer canvas material, not the rough courser weave as seen on these.

I am troubled too by the shortness of the leather retainer straps. I think the set is ok but it looks like someone trimmed the leather retaining tabs. Perhaps a late war economy measure? Perhaps a personal preference to make them look smarter when buckled? I have a similar pair with the center stiffener. Will try to dig them out. In the meantime, here are the LW pair I purchased last year that were previously posted on the "Lowly Gamaschen" thread. NH

Hello,
The gaiters that opened this thread are original WWII. They're late first type "hybrid" gaiters, with leather edging and internal stiffener. The straps were shortened.

First type is made in one part only, with leather edging
First type "hybrid" is made of two parts sewn together, with leather edging and internal stiffener
Second type is made of two parts sewn together, with internal stiffener only...
The pair shown by Neil is a second type.

Great details JPhillip! I knew my LW set was late war based on the absence of leather edging. Helps that they are dated too. : )
Going through my box of Heer items tonight to look for that other pair for comparison. NH
