Now, now Dan! Actually this little bugger is well designed to get deep into the ground for efficient grounding. You will note the ground stake has holes in that let moist soil inside to make a good ground as well. In a pinch, I'd guess they make a good defensive weapon too! NH
Just having a dig at overall German "efficiency" Neil ....... but being in the electrical game ( and our company makes earth rods for domestic and commercial use ) I know just how difficult it is to get a good earth point and for all the whizzbang ideas they come up with, a bit of re-bar really would do the job in most cases. I mean a holster for an earth stake!!!!??? you have to agree that's a little over the top!

Cheers, Dan ( but I love equipment so I'm still jealous as I don't own one )

    field radio equipment?

You are probably correct. The ground stake could have been much more compact. You should see what the typical small phone squad member looked like with all this stuff hanging off their belts. The photo shows all kinds of gear hanging off the belts including hatchets. NH
