Looks & sounds like a Hairclippers tin?! Disinfectant tin!!!
Hauptner were/are? hair clipper & Medical manufactures!
No idea if it is Wartime........
So no gas tin but interesting anyway!

Alkaloid & Mallein are toxins (acids)
desinfektionsmittel = disinfectant
So it was either a holder for these or something was disinfected in the tin!

I have similar tins in one of my Doctors field kits. Tins are either numbered or named. I expect this corresponds to the appropriate Hdv packing list that states exactly the contents to be carried? I notice the V 214 might indicate Vetinare as large amount of vets were employed to keep the horses on the road. If I can find my vet kit I will check it for anything similar.

Jock thanks that would be cool . Also the tin looks like it was lined on both sides only the felt is left on the lid. Gary
You may be on to something! My Mum (thanks mum ) said Hauptner make/made the blue spray that horsey types use to spray on horse cuts and grazes!!! Its a spray disinfectant!
