Gebirgsjäger / Mountain Troop Collection

Article about: Did some dusting recently and took the Gebirgsjäger items out into nature where they belong as a group to shoot some newer pics for the website. Hope you enjoy! Have a good weekend guys! Ros

    Hey Rossi,
    S'cuse my ignorance, but what is the rivets on the crossguard of the bayo for? ( never seen that before )
    Also, whats the reinforcing plate on the K98 butt? ( a field repair or ....? )

    Hey Dan,

    From what I understand it has additional steel reinforcing at the butt to strengthen the carbine / rifle construction as the Mountain Troops climbed & moved in the rugged conditions. It was intended to be used as a climbing aid. The carbine / rifle barrel is shorter than the normal K98 so the bayonet is longer than the standard issue. With the longer blade I believe the extra rivets were for increased strength to the bayonet due to the length. I am no expert and will try to find my readings on the rife from years ago.

    Also below is the G. 33/40 Carbine laying next to my K98 rifle. You can see length difference in the two firearms along with the difference in the bayonets.
