OK, so lets start with webbing. Here is a selection of short straps - there are others with leather ends - or rubber ends - or leather reinforcing stirrups but the point of this group photo is to show the different webbing weaves you may come across.

Starting from the top is a VERY cloth-like web ( note the 1941 date ) that seems quite flimsy then the weave gets more coarse as you go to the bottom one ( which is what is known as a "post-war BW" strap ) and the fraying becomes less as the webbing becomes stronger....... logical, really.

The second last is almost as coarse a web as the "BW" one .... but it IS wartime ( from a 1944 kanister ) and I have a late war breadbag that has a similar coarse cloth weave to it ( that's another topic for another thread however )

It is absolutely true that the Bundeswehr used this type on their gasmask kanisters but I am of the opinion that manufacturers would have used this type had 1945 been just another war year! There were LOTS of excess stock that flowed into the BW stores that had NO markings of the previous authority on them and so why not use them post war?

    Food for thought?
    Cheers, Dan

Thankyou Lebus, I see that even with uniformity in the rubberized ends and rivets there is a variation in webbing material!
Fascinating for some of us, I'm sure!

I am sure breadbag straps were a perfect replacement too -

Thanks, Dan. I appreciate you starting this. I think the gas mask & canister is an icon of the Landser, and would like to learn more about them.
My thoughts entirely ! I'm also a fan of MP44.nl but there is to me considerable confusion over German gasmasks and I am keen to learn more......

    Hey guys

    Great research here

It's a coincidence, but I am in the process of re-writing the gas mask section of my website at the moment... but it's a lot of work.

about the BW straps... I think the gasmasks for the Bw are produced round 58. So i don't know if they kept the straps in storage for so long....

I have aprox 30 Gasmasks in my collection, and they all have more or less different strap, so the task of identifying all different straps is almost impossible

To those having difficulty identifying BW straps, i would suggest buying a pair of these straps, normally they can be found for 3 - 5 €. once yo have seen a pair of these it is easy to identify them..
