    I bought this map case from Ebay a couple years back, but I can't figure out if it is German or Russian. The seller was from Germany. Could this be a little restoration project(Add straps etc) or should it be left like it is?

    I can't see any markings.

    And while taking the pictures, I notice what looks like battle damage:

    My opinion is that it isn't German, or at least not Third Reich period made anyway. I may be mistaken, but I think the German WWII map cases were of slightly darker leather, and had embossed markings. Wait for others to comment though.

    This is a nice NCO's bag M 40 ( Сержантская сумка-Serdzhaondskaya soomkah- in right transcription), it's not a map case, the maps was a rare issue even for infantry Company chief in the rank Lieutenant or Senior Lieutenant- they did not have the maps as shown in the war time practice. This bag was widely used as a enemy trophees- in this case a German soldier used it. Artificial soviet keerdza leather is high wear resistance cloth, which looks found useful by Germans
