Hopefully someone on the forum is up to speed on German ww.2 tactical symbols and can tell me what the one I have posted stands for. I have looked and am still uncertain as to what this is. all and any help is much appreciated. I prefer someone who knows to tell me than to presume and get it wrong.

From memory i think a plain rectangle was an infantry platoon.

    I'd say an infantry battalion:

A plain rectangle was the symbol for infantry units. If it was drawn in a light outline on all four sides, it identified a platoon, a company had a bold line on the left side and a battalion a bold outline all around. (The same principle applied to the symbols for the other branches.)

    Also, Roman numerals identified battalions/detachments.

Appreciating the input here. The attached symbol chart shows similar but not exactly the same, The Artillery Park symbol is close but has an added bit on the top.

I would have said it was for the 1st Battalion. What is it from ?

Its from a decorated ashtray. Quite a unusual piece, more work to be done before I can post pictures of it though. Thanks for your input, much appreciated.
