From memory i think a plain rectangle was an infantry platoon.

I'd say an infantry battalion:
A plain rectangle was the symbol for infantry units. If it was drawn in a light outline on all four sides, it identified a platoon, a company had a bold line on the left side and a battalion a bold outline all around. (The same principle applied to the symbols for the other branches.)
Also, Roman numerals identified battalions/detachments.

Its from a decorated ashtray. Quite a unusual piece, more work to be done before I can post pictures of it though. Thanks for your input, much appreciated.
