42 is the year, don't know about the GNL.
hear it could come from the Kriegsmarine due to the fact that it's made of aluminium.
GNL will be the maker: the type of metal used has no bearing on the branch of service which used the item.

anyone knows what it might be worth...
G.N.L. is a very commonly seen maker of German messkits, canteens and so forth. This particular fork looks to be from an Army mess hall.
