These things were stock piled and issued post-war, too. As such, I suspect that the green paint is not WWII vintage.
My guess would be 1940.
Well, the maker mark hrh/40 indicates that it is produced in 1940. hrh is Daimon Fabrik elektrotechnischer Apparate GmbH (???)
are you sure it is hrh ??
The number 9437 most probably is the weapon number of the MG.
btw, if the paint is original, it is very nice..... is there red under the green ??

cant be, the last letter is -h- so it must be something with H!
If it`s brh then it`s Schaltbau,Munich,they did make things for the army in WW2,scroll down to page 14.......http://www.schaltbau-gmbh.com/files/...haltbau_en.pdf

According to Michael Heidlers book "Deutsche Fertigungskennzeichen" they did make Gurtkasten
If the original paint is still under there I would try to remove the new layer of paint
