My first guess with the gym marking was a jockstrap/cup case. But thank goodness the actual use was pointed out before I embarrassed myself. That was close!!!!!

It looks a lot like some goggle tins i have seen yet too big. Interesting what Bill says although i have never seen a film case like it. Hope someone can positively identify it for you.
